Indoor home improvement projects to increase the value of your home

There are plenty of ways to increase value of your home, and most don’t require any major renovations nor disruptions to your day-to-day routine. If your home is well-looked after and structurally sound, then a simple home improvement project may be all that you need to help attract potential buyers. Below are 10 easy projects you can do to help add value to your home.

  1. Update the front door
You know what they say, first impression counts, particularly if you’re selling your home. So, why not replace or simply paint your existing front door? According to Sullivan, bold colours such as red, purple and green as well as darker colours such as navy or grey are good way to “boost your home’s curb appeal”1. While you’re at it, why not invest in a new entrance mat and a new door handle to complete the look.
  2. Replace the windows
Another great way to add value to your home is by replacing the windows. Replacing your windows can increase your home’s energy efficiency while reducing noise and make your home more appealing. You can either install ‘insert windows” or choose to completely replace the entire windows. According to Pocock, insert windows allows you to keep majority of the existing fittings and involves removing the internal sashes and inserting new aluminium sashes. On the other hand, full replacement windows involve removing the entire window “leaving only the opening just a like new home build”2. Full replacement windows will incur additional cost, so make sure you consider the usage, its lifetime and your budget before deciding.
  3. While on the topics of window, why not replace your window furnishings?
Another great way to add more value to your home is by updating your window furnishing. You can choose from curtains, blinds or shutters, or even consider electric roller blinds. According to hometolove, shutters and timber venetians are perfect for adding warmth and style, whilst those looking to “add a luxe finish to rooms, [may] opt for a timeless block out curtain in a rich fabric”3.
  4. Freshen your rooms with splash of paint
Perhaps the most cost efficient and quickest way to add value to your home is simply adding a new coat of paint. According to Sebring Design Build, greys, blues, greens and pastels are the hottest trend for 2022. However, if you’re after a more classic approach we recommend sticking to white to make your home look clean, bright and spacious.
  5. Update the flooring
For a new home feel, why not update your home’s flooring? “Replacing your floors can completely transform your space! You can make a sterile-looking room as cosy at is it comes with some carpet or cork, [or you can] improve the value and appearance of your entire home with some hardwood or travertine”5. If you’re after a long-lasting and appealing option, we suggest hardwood flooring, but if you’re after a more sustainable approach, why not consider bamboo flooring? It’s “just as durable as hardwood and drop-dead gorgeous to boot”5.
  6. Install new and low energy lighting
Another cost-effective way to add some ‘wow’ into your home is simply by installing new lighting fixtures. Effective lighting is crucial in both home and work environments, and modern lighting can also help you reduce your power bill and create a more sustainable home. We suggest swapping your traditional halogen and incandescent light globes for LEDs as they use less energy, last longer and there plenty of colour choices available.
  7. Replace the splash back
You’ve painted your home, installed new flooring and replaced the front door. Now it’s time to turn your attention to the heart of the home – the kitchen. There are plenty of things you can do to improve the look of your kitchen, however, we suggest updating your splashback. It’s a great way to add a bit of personality while improving the whole look and feel of your kitchen. Acrylic splashback is a low-cost alternative to glass but remember it cannot be placed directly behind the stove.
  8. Replace toilet, sink and shower head
If your home is little dated then you may want to consider replacing your toilet and sink, as an “old sink or toilet can age an otherwise impressive bathroom”3. New sinks and toilet will add a modern appeal to your bathrooms and will help make it more water efficient. You can choose from freestanding, above counter sinks or a vanity for a fresher powder room. Also, consider replacing your shower head, it not only saves you water, but it can also improve your water pressure and give you 10 minute pick-me-up if you choose a product with multiple spray settings.
  9. Replace door and kitchen handles
Another great way to update your kitchen and your entire home is to replace your door and kitchen handles. There are plenty of styles to choose from including brass, nickel and chrome.
  10. Update taps
Finally, complete your home improvement project by installing new taps, not only will it make your home look more modern, but it can also help you save water by choosing taps that have a high WELS rating.
