Destination Dee Why
Dee Why, a coastal suburb in Northern Sydney lies 18 kilometres north east of Sydney’s Central Business District with its 1.2 kilometres stretch of beach. No one seems to know how this suburb got its name but what we do know is that its 30-hectare lagoon is a haven for wildlife and migratory birds especially the black swan. The suburb also attracted several award-winning architects, musicians and artists who called it their home. Today it is home to a population of approximately 22,000 most of which are Australian born millennials.
The suburb is serviced by buses: one plies along Pittwater Road to the city, Manly, North Sydney, Collaroy, Cromer and Narrabeen, another to Chatswood via Warringah Road to the west and the third to the city and Mona Vale.
The seven schools in the area provide the educational needs of the young families that live here: Dee Why Public School, Fisher Road Special School, St Kevin’s Catholic School, St Luke’s Grammar School, Peninsula Boys Grammar, St Luke’s Anglican College for girls and a K-12 Anglican School.
Although most of the people who live in Dee Why state they do not have any religious affinities, the suburb has its fair share of churches catering to the various denominations (Methodists, Presbyterians, Catholic, Jehovah’s Witness and Baptist).
It is also home to a Sir John Sulman award winning library, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets, the Dee Why Market, Village Plaza, Meriton Retail Precinct, RSL Club, and two multi-storey apartment buildings: The Strand and the Dee Why Grand. Of course, it has the requisite entertainment venues, cafes, restaurants, bars, bottle shop and a function centre.
